Sun Peaks Fire Rescue (SPFR) is a relatively young fire department. Founded in 1995, the first "firehall" was a maintenance building used by the resort. As the needs of the community increased, a more permanent hall was required and was built at the current department location.

Over the years the department has acquired more and more equipment in response to an increasing need for fire protection and First Responder service for the immediate community and rural residents in the Heffley valley area. SPFR is responsible for an area encompassing approximately 400 hectares, with an assessed value of approximately $380 million dollars. As well, under the direction of Fire Chief Bill Stoner SPFR has developed a wildland fire interface policy with a mandate to provide aggressive response and wildfire protection in the area immediately around the resort.

The Sun Peaks Resort Improvement District recently recognized a need to provide more dedicated fire protection and has hired 3 career staff to complement SPFR's tireless volunteer members. The career staff are responsible for prevention and pre-planning, public education, training, inspections and investigations, and fire protection among other duties.

Currently the department has 17 volunteer on-call members who provide the backbone of the First Responder program and fire protection for the community of Sun Peaks.

To prevent fires,
protect gas meters

Excessive snow and ice build up can damage gas meters, causing gas accumulation and potential house fires.

A temporary cover can help prevent meter damage. It can be as simple as a plywood sheet leaning against the house to deflect the falling snow.

Do not bury the meter and avoid ploughing into it with snow removal equipment. When removing snow from rooftops, take care that the meter does not become covered in ice or snow.

If you smell gas inside your home, follow these steps.
1) Extinguish all smoking material or any other source of open flame. Do not operate electrical switches, appliances or thermostats.
2) Shut off the main gas valve, open the windows and doors, and get everyone outside and away from the building. If the smell is very strong or if you hear a blowing or hissing noise, leave immediately.
3) Odorant is added to propane and natural gas. If gas escapes, it emits an unpleasant "rotten eggs" smell.

How to turn off our meter: Using a wrench or other suitable tool, give the valve a quarter turn in either direction so that it is crosswise to the pipe (see diagram)

You can turn your gas off at the main shut-off valve on the inlet pipe next to your gas meter.

CAUTION! Once the gas is shut off at the meter, DON'T try to turn it back on. Only a certified gas technician can turn the gas on safely. Call Terasen Gas or any qualified gas fitter to restore gas service. If leaking gas starts to burn, don't try to put the flame out. Leave immediately and only shut off the gas at the meter if you are able.
